The under-the-radar midfielders who statistically profile like the best young controllers (2026)

We ran a player-similarity model across 18 leagues to find midfielders who profile like two of the game's most-scouted young controllers — Angelo Stiller and Kobbie Mainoo — but fly under the radar. Names at Espanyol, Como, Hoffenheim and Gent, not the ones already on every shortlist.

How to read this:“Fit” is a weighted match of the statistical profile (0–100), not a quality or ceiling rating, and value is a market estimate. A midfielder posting a template-like profile in a smaller league is a flag to dig into, not a claim he is that player. Every section links to the live shortlist so you can check the model yourself.

Deep-lying playmakers — profiles like Angelo Stiller

Metronomes who dictate from deep: press-resistant, high pass volume, progressive. Edu Expósito (Espanyol) and Lucas Da Cunha (Como) match the template in bigger leagues; Joey Veerman is the Eredivisie benchmark.

Ball-carrying young controllers — profiles like Kobbie Mainoo

Two-way midfielders who carry through the lines and cover ground. Kodai Sano just earned a Hoffenheim move; Abdelkahar Kadri stepped up to Gent; Eric Dina Ebimbe is back at Frankfurt after a loan spell.

The model called it

Self-validation: the same model rated these midfielders highly before their 2026 moves — Kodai Sano (→ Hoffenheim, featured above), Nadiem Amiri (→ RB Leipzig) and Gjivai Zechiël (→ Lille). Profile matching flagging real market moves, not just noise.

Method

For each reference midfielder we take per-90 metrics, percentile-rank them within the detailed position, then league-strength adjust before comparing across leagues. We keep the closest profiles and deliberately exclude the already-obvious names to surface genuine under-the-radar midfielders. Coverage: 18 leagues across Europe and South America, last three seasons. Data via Sofascore. Known limits: it leans on volume metrics, the league coefficients are coarse, and it can't see off-ball positioning, temperament or ceiling — treat it as a shortlist to dig into, not a verdict. Clubs verified as of July 2026; transfer situations move fast.

Run any midfielder yourself — filter by age, league and budget.
